• It's what I'm best known for in my books :)  You can look at the reviews on the individual pages, but the short version is that I have written YA, MG, adult, & kids books. I've edited and written short stories. There are bestsellers in at least a half dozen countries, most of the lists in the US, and various awards, YALSA lists, and starred reviews (both in kid and adult fiction).

  • I taught university literature and composition for 12 years. Despite the above accolades, you may not like my actual books. Judging books is a very subjective thing. I will tell you, however, that I'm a very, very good teacher. It was my calling and passion, and getting to come to talk to a group of students or writers who want to craft a book is a joy.

  • According to Charlaine Harris (#1NYT Author of the Sookie Stackhouse series, the Aurora Teagarden series, and the Lily Bard series), "No one builds worlds like Melissa Marr" (quote provided in reference to my novel, GRAVEMINDER).

#1:  I'm good at it :)

  • "Melissa is an engaging and entertaining speaker. My students loved the details Melissa shared about the writing process, especially her children's roles in shaping her stories. They also really enjoyed seeing the illustrations used to visualize the characters and learning about the collaboration with Kelly Armstrong. My teachers loved the way Melissa engaged reluctant participants and mischief-makers. In fact, several of our "non-readers" are now hooked on The Blackwell Pages series, thanks to their connections with Melissa during the presentation. The Viking shield was also a big hit!" - Diane Hance, Middle School Librarian / Round Rock, Texas

  • Go HERE to see photos from another school visit where the use of the shield was demonstrated.

  • I taught at university for TWELVE YEARS.

#2:  My middle grade is a great fit for the classroom.

  • "Norse mythology brought to life with engaging contemporary characters and future volumes that promise explosive action; ideal for Percy Jackson fans who want to branch out." (Kirkus Reviews)
  • "Loki's Wolves brings Norse mythology to the modern world...The background and explanation of the legends are clear and a natural fit to the story and dialogue, bringing life to lesser-known Norse mythology...Recommended for those who enjoyed Rick Riordan's 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' series." (School Library Journal)
  • "This smart, fast-paced, action-packed novel...offers readers a solid adventure story that still manages not to skimp on character...An excellent what-to-read-next for Percy Jackson fans, this novel will also please young readers of Marvel's Thor and myth-lovers already familiar with Norse lore..." (Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books)
  • "These authors are no strangers to weaving a compelling tale. Once the story moves past the background, the plot picks up quickly and the adventure doesn't disappoint." (Library Media Connection)

Starting in 2015, there are TWO standard presentation options--one for young readers & a new one (field tested at conferences in 2014) for teen and adult writers.  Hopefully, a folklore presentation will be forthcoming in the year as well.

If you are interested in something else, contact me (via my assistant laura @ melissa-marr . com), and we can discuss the matter. I am ALSO particularly open and flexible for adoption or parenting groups (see BUNNY ROO page) to discuss the genesis of my picture book and the journey of adopting a child experiencing NAS (neonatal abstinence syndrome).
