The Editorial Freelancers Association (of which I am a member) rate card recommends from $40–60/hr for developmental editing. At a fairly standard estimation, the editor can do between 1 and 5 pages per hour.
I'm charging on the low end of that. $40/hour.
My NOVEL RATES:
I am offering a rate of $40/hour for developmental/content editing only. This includes story development, world building, character, pacing, point of view, and light copyediting.
PLEASE NOTE: The rate you start at is locked in for TWO YEARS for repeat clients.
Rates will increase, but existing clients hold their rate for two years.
In some cases, a manuscript is clean enough that I have done as many as twelve pages per hour. This is not typical, but I have done editorial notes for numerous NYT bestselling authors over the last decade. The number of pages per hour I can do is based upon the density of the writing, complexity, and polish of the writing.
When I see the sample pages, I can give you an estimated quote.
NOTE: All texts are to be double-spaced, Times New Roman font, 12 point font, with standard 1inch margins. I use MS Word’s Track Changes for notes. Alternately, you can send me a hard-copy of the text with a pre-addressed, postage paid envelope for return. (Double-sided is perfectly fine and encouraged.) I prefer hard-copy to the point that I will discount $25 from the total fee for anyone who opts in for this.
I may be able to sometimes do “rush jobs.” This will add 25% extra in order to move to the front of the queue (i.e. 14 day turn around). This option is not always available.
As an add-on, if you would like a second pass edit after you’ve revised, I will do a second round of the same manuscript at the discounted rate of $24/hour. This second pass offer is valid for six months
I taught punctuation and style at university, so I enjoy this. However, my assistant also offers copyediting services. She does all of my books, was a magazine editor, and has done CE for assorted authors. I can refer you to her if my rate is too high for you.
MY PARTIAL MANUSCRIPT or SHORT STORY RATES (Developmental Editing):
This option is offered as a way for you to get a partial section of your novel edited for content, development, world building, character, and pacing. The intent is that you can take the feedback on that partial text and apply it to the rest of your manuscript.
Additionally, I will read your short story and offer editorial notes on content, development, world building, character, and pacing. As short stories do not pay very much in our current marketplace, I offer these rates with the awareness that the market for short stories is not a lucrative one and with a love of the short story.
For these partial novel manuscripts or short stories, the full fee is due in advance.
I understand that money can be tight. I also know that the first pages are critical--and my favorite types of text to edit. I will be extra detailed on partials and short stories.
$500 for up to 5,000 words
$750 for up to 10,000 words
NOTE: I use MS Word’s Track Changes for notes. Alternately, you can send me a hard-copy of the text with a pre-addressed, postage paid envelope for return. (Double-sided is perfectly fine and encouraged.) I prefer hard-copy to the point that I will discount $20 from the total fee for anyone who opts in for this.
